Corn Soup with Garlic and Herb Bread.

This week we made ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS  soup. It had corn and bacon, everyone who got to try it loved it. We also made herb and garlic bread. We did not have a recipe (it had to come out of the teachers head as the wifi was down). The next time that happens at your school you should ask if you can cook.

First, we got a medium onion and chopped it really fine, then put it in a pot. Next, we chopped the bacon really fine and added it to the pot. We left the fat on it so that it would stop the onion and the bacon sticking. We cooked it until it was really browned nicely. After that, we added a can of creamed corn and 2 tablespoons of flour while the pot was not on the heat. Then we put the pot back on the element and slowly add milk while stirring.  There is no measurement for the milk as you decided how thick you want the soup to be. One group wanted thinner soup so they added more milk. We also made a bun each with garlic and herb butter. The teacher got someone to get it from a factory so we did not have to make our own. We cut our bun in slices (but not all the way through) and put as much butter in as we liked. Then we wrapped it in foil and put it in the oven to get hot. Some of us have decided that we will make this at home as it was soooooo delicious.

St Johns

We took part in the St Johns in Schools Programme.  We learnt about DRSABCS which is REALLY important if you come across an accident. It is important to stop and access that there is no danger before you try to help someone. When you send for help you ask the person to come back and tell you that they have done it so you know that they did not forget or get distracted or even panic.

Danger
Response
Send for help
Airways
Breathing
CPR
Defib

We learnt how to put someone in the recovery position until help arrived and make sure they were breathing and that their airways were clear. We learnt how to bandage people, it was fun as we had fake sores that looked gross and we had to bandage them carefully as if it was a real emergency.
Once we had finished bandaging we had to roll the bandages up, for some of us this was a real problem. Next, we learnt how to put a support sling on. These types of slings are really good if you need to keep the limb elevated to try and stop bleeding.
At the end of the course,
we all received a small first aid kit that was sponsored by the ASB. The teacher wished she had one.
Catherine (the lady who came and taught us) we really good and she didn't mind if we made a mistake or had a laugh. She did check that we did everything though and was really helpful. Our class would recommend that you do this if you get a chance.

We also got a certificate for participating.

Scones and Milkshakes

Today there were only four of us at school (in our class) so the teacher looked around the school to see what ingredients there were and we cooked food for ourselves and the juniors. There weren't many ingredients so we could only make scones.
Scones
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons Baking Powder
1 cup Milk
50 grams butter

They came out really yummy and rose nice and high. She found raspberry jam, Nutella and honey so we could put what ever we wanted on them. (and butter)
For the milkshake, we had a little tub of ice cream and we could add whatever we wanted. There were strawberry and chocolate milkshake flavouring but also vanilla and raspberry essence as well as maple syrup, bananas, apples and kiwifruit. We could add what ever we felt like. It was a fun morning! We gave the teachers scones for morning tea and everyone in the school who wanted one got a scone.

Sir Peter Blake Award

Sir Peter Blake believed in the incredible potential of young Kiwis to achieve great things. He knew that inspiring leaders of any age could be found in every corner of New Zealand. Sir Peter showed all of us there are leaders and there are dreamers. Leaders make things happen. Dreamers have a vision. The truly special people do both. In that spirit, and in partnership with Westpac, our Young Leader Awards celebrate young people whose outstanding leadership uplifts their school community.
Blake Evans from our class received this award.

The Award was presented By Mr Pete Caddle from Westpac. We really enjoyed what he shared about himself and that he recognised when he needed to make changes. He talked to us about the process of achieving.
  1. Think
  2. Plan
  3. Do
  4. Help
  5. Check

The things that make a good leader are people who

  • have their own leadership style - it could be a quiet or a big, bold approach
  • work well with their peers, not just alone
  • communicate well, and can relate to both students and teachers
  • are doing good things in their school, home, and community
  • aren’t afraid of a hard task, and get stuck in
  • are thoughtful and considerate of others
  • take on extra duties, and do them well
  • do things with a great attitude
  • know how to have fun.

End of Year France Party - Bastille Day 14 July
We have some new students in our school  who speak French as well as English, so as a way to get to know and understand them and their culture their mum came and did a presentation about France.
Our class made decorations and we had a food tasting.
We had a red blue and white themed mufti day.
Some people painted their tops with the french flag.

Recipes - they are DELICIOUS We had Quiche Lorraine, Nesquik tartines and hot chocolate made with milk. Click the link above and try the recipes they are delicious. The slide shows were really awesome as Vee explained and talked about each slide. We learnt a lot about the French culture, artists, houses, castles, traditions and we learnt some French. We hope that Tara and Tane feel welcome in our school and it is good to know about their heritage.

    Runanga School Show
Runanga School wrote and presented a show about how people whisper, gossip and how many times it isn't true. Our school caught a bus and were on it for about 15 mins to get there. The school has a small hall and they had made some raised up seats that we could sit on. this meant that even the little kids could get to see past the people on the chairs. We loved their costumes and music. The little kids were all wearing onesies and and danced to 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. The students did the sound and the lights so that meant everyone in the school took part in the show. Our school were really impressed and we all enjoyed it. the message was a good one and we all need to remember that gossiping is hurtful and shouldn't happen for any reason.
     Three Ingredient Banana Oat Cookies
As part of our writing we watched a YouTube presentation on how to make these cookies. We then had to write the recipe correctly making sure we had the procedure right and all the materials listed. (it was way harder than we thought and it ended up taking us two days before we could cook). When we had it correct we were each allowed to make a batch of cookies each.   The teacher aide made some to share with the other classes and we were allowed to take ours home to our family. They were YUMMY especially if you like chocolate.  Some of us decided that when we make them at home we might put less chocolate and maybe put some dried fruit or some nuts.

Here is the link with the recipe       ,Banana Oat Cookies

We recommend you HAVE A GO as they are soooosooooo easy and soooooooo YUM

Duffy Books - Careers - Election

We got our Duffy books  this week. It is Government book week and they were handed out to us by Maureen Pugh. She is our local Member Of Parliament (for National).
She talked to us about her Career (we are always looking at Careers so that when we get older we might have heard someone talk about their job and think "wow" I want to do that.
We are also going to study the election and vote when it is election time so it was interesting to have her here. The teacher reminds us that we have to make our own choices about who to vote for so we have lots of listening and reading to do about it when it gets nearer. Our vote will be private but we need to say why we are voting for who we choose.

We Love getting our Duffy Books and even if we are reading something else most of us drop that and start our Duffy Book straight away.
    El Gregoe
We had a visit from the magician Elgregoe the magician. He did his 'You've got the Power' show. It is about  'No Bully'. and how you can be a HERO at school. HERO stands for Helping, Encouraging, Respectful, Opportunities. We  learnt what to do in bullying situations with a big focus on seeking help and letting people know. Only when we are aware of what is going on can we make a difference and change a situation. The Show is sponsored by Trust Power but our PTF (Parent, Teacher, Friends committee sponsored us a little more which made it $3 for each of us. We recommend that you go if you get a chance. We loved all the birds and also that some of us got to go up and be part of his show.

    WIG DAY

We did some fundraising for child cancer. Everyone in the school was allowed to wear a wig, if you didn't have one you were allowed to decorate your hair. It was a gold coin donation to participate. The teachers also wore wigs and matched their clothes to their wig. It was a fun day and it was great that we can make money to help other children who are having problems.

    Making Donuts

Today the year 6 students made donuts. The year 7 and 8 students went to technology at the high school. There were only 6 of us so we worked in two groups as we had 2 donut makers. The donut makers mad different size donuts.

We whipped cream and put about 2 tablespoons of vanilla instant pudding into it, this stops it going runny if it is sitting for a long time. It made it taste a little bit like custard.

We were allowed to eat as many as we liked. We had SO much fun we stayed at morning tea to keep making them. We made enough for the whole school to  have seconds.
                     YUM

If you ever get a chance you should try them as they are REALLY NICE.

    Cross Country - Fun Run

    Cross Country - Fun Run

We had our school cross country last Friday. All the people who were serious runners (they had been training every day) went first and were timed as they wanted to qualify to go to Kumara for the West Coast one (it is held at the Kumara Racecourse and yet get time off school)
Th rest of us who were not serious and were happy to just get out and have a good time went off in our year levels (first, second and third place were still important).
There was a big puddle that we had fun playing in. One of the little kids lost their shoe and it took us a while to find it. We also had mud fights. It was heaps of un. We were also sponsered and were raising funds for our end of year mystery bus tour. On the last day we of school we get on a bus and have a suprise fun day to end the year.

    National Young Leaders Day.

Last  week ten students went to National Young Leaders in Christchurch. We left at 9 am and went over Arthurs Pass. We did some shopping at Riccarton Mall and then when our accommodation was ready we went there. We stayed in ‘the lodge’ at Meadow Park Top Ten. Each room sleeps 4 people and had a shower, toilet and basin. Once we were unpacked and sorted Miss Smith went to buy our food and Mrs Magon supervised us swimming in the heated pool. We had Hells Pizza for tea. There are two great playgrounds, a pillow, a games room with large size games and a room with arcade games. Some of us won lots of lollies.

The next morning we got up early and headed off to Horncastle Arena for the conference. It was an AMAZING and INSPIRING DAY!! There was a theme for the day E KORE AU E NGARO HE KAKANO I RUIA MAI I RANGIATEA -  I AM A SEED BORN OF GREATNESS. Our first speaker was Aaron Jackson an actor (he is Hayden in Shortland St) - he talked about NGARO - the times we all have when we feel invisible and have nothing to offer. Next came Daniel Flynn - he is from ‘Thank You’ and told how he worked despite being told no again and again to build up a company that makes sure there is fresh water for people all over the world. He gave us 2 books, if you buy his book there is no set price you just pay what you think it is worth. We then had some netball players speak and then nomad (band was interviewed). At lunch it was a big party where we danced and had our photos taken. After lunch Adam and Duane who bought a beach in the Abel Tasman National Park for “all of us” by starting a Give- A- Little campaign told their

story and how important is to work with a team and support each other. They talked about KAKANO - everyone has the potential to make the world a better place and that “impossibility is someone's opinion, not a fact”. It is important that we all help each other. We also learnt about RUIA  - this was about how we become like the people we choose to spend time with so it's important to make good friends.
Lastly was Matt Brown a hair artist, (he did an amazing haircut that we all wanted !!!!). He talked about RANGIATEA  - how we can leave the world a better place and achieve greatness in small ways every day. Finally Nomad played 2 songs and we all got to dance up by the stage. It finished at 3.00pm and we left to come home.

I wish that we were rich enough to take more than 10 kids as we all (even the adults) learnt something about how we can grow into better, greater people no matter what happens in our live (if we make good choices).
